Title: Integration of Distributed Energy Resources in Portugal

Abstract: The electric power system is quickly changing due to the growing penetration of renewable energy sources. In Portugal, more than 50% of the electricity generation is already ensured with renewables and the objective is to achieve 100% renewable generation until 2050. In such a scenario, the intermittency of resources such as wind and PV power will pose major challenges to ensure the electric grid reliability. However, new resources such as battery energy systems, electric vehicles and flexible loads will provide new tools for electric grid management. This seminar will present the actual and future challenges in the Portuguese grid, and will discuss the potential impacts that can be achieved with the coordination and optimization of distributed energy resources to ensure the large-scale integration of intermittent renewable generation in the Portuguese grid.
